A while back,
Spy_Isis made the following suggestion to
BlckwngdOrcl: There is a yummy Vietnamese/Thai place near your house called Saigon Cafe, go there and get the passion fruit bubble tea, it will make you happy. And to me: Take your hubby out to the Saigon Cafe, you too must have bubble tea, but try a different flavor and report back. Both were as part of a meme we responded to, as the answer to "I’ll challenge you to try something".
So, the other day (his payday), we did.
Neither of us had any idea what bubble tea was. I actually assumed it was fizzy or something. He got the passion fruit (as directed) and I got blueberry. At
ToguSpyder's suggestion, I also got a shot of tapioca in mine (which, apparently, isn't what you'd think - I couldn't tell a difference in texture - the guy said it made it sweeter, which, in retrospect, probably wasn't a good idea).
OK, so the tea comes out. Normal tea, with ice, in this plastic glass with a film over the top of it, and a straw you punched through the film to get to the drink. It was a larger-than-normal straw, which I didn't think anything of, until I started drinking it. The "bubble" in bubble tea apparently refers to this ...stuff at the bottom. It was kinda like a cross between Jell-O and tapioca (although I'm sure it had nothing to do with the tapioca shot, 'cause
BlckwngdOrcl had the same in his drink), and about pea-sized. When you drank the tea, these little bubbly things also got sucked up in the straw, and you could either swallow them or chew them. I'm very fond of drinks with texture, like high-pulp orange juice, fruit nectars, and whatnot, so I enjoyed munching these a great deal. (As aside: I did NOT like the "texture" of the milk I poured today, which was at least 2 weeks earlier than its expiration date. I "textured" it down the drain.) So, pros of bubble tea - unique, interesting, fun! Cons - OMGWTFBBQ could it BE any fucking sweeter??? I couldn't finish it. I'm sure somewhere in the world they make an unsweetened version (NOT just no sugar... no sweetners of ANY kind), and I think I'd adore that.
BlckwngdOrcl isn't a fan of texture-y drinks (he prefers no pulp OJ), so it wasn't his fave. All in all, though, glad I tried it! :)
