This is undoubtedly a shameless plug for my therapist, and her methods, but I make no apologies for that. All I can say is, what she does, and what Core Energetics does, is amazing.

Also, the godawful expensive workshop that's mentioned towards the end, the one in February, is worth every single fucking penny. [livejournal.com profile] blckwngdorcl and I went to the shorter version last year, and we're both still seeing lasting effects from it, both in our personal lives, and our relationships. This is one worth taking the time off work and borrowing money for (since I know most of my friends are broke, too). Anyway, enjoy.

Anti Anxiety Wisdom: Core Energetics Resting & Rejuvenation

August is a time of renewal for me. For 45 years I have spent August in Maine
resting in the sacred quiet of Down-East-Eagle-Country. From my house I see only
trees, water and the creatures that live here. Eagles fly overhead and nest
around the bend, thrilling my soul with their majestic flights and the sounds of
their unique screeching calls. Raccoons, skunks, red squirrels, an occasional
bear, seals, and water birds galore keep me company as the tide rises and falls
an amazing 15 to 20 feet creating an ever changing landscape. Over the years if
I arrived tired, anxious, or undernourished in my soul, this place has
rejuvenated me. It is part of my deeply spiritual home.

Anxiety is occurs when worrying about possible negative outcomes, or ruminating
about something after the initial thinking process has unearthed what we can do
about a problem. Anxiety is about living in a negative situation that we feel we
have no capacity to change. We lose the ability to trust ourselves to cope with
whatever comes our way or lose faith in the universe to keep us ultimately safe.
Over time, anxiety shows up in our body in many ways, if not resolved will cause
misery, then illness. In fact anxiety can be a killer.

Anxiety is an epidemic in our society. We often respond to life by turning our
attention to the negative, sometimes with panic. Adrenaline rushes in to help us
deal with our perceived emergency that our bodies' primitive mechanism treats
the same as if we were being attacked by a saber toothed tiger. Only this time
we don't run, scream, or fight. We are "civilized" and often times the danger we
are up against is living the modern life of going to a job we hate, living with
a bad relationship or marriage, not talking back to our boss, or parents, and
being out of control about the quality of our air and water, living in cities
where too many people are driving in stop- start traffic that puts us behind the
wheel for hours a day. All this while we clench or teeth, our guts stop working
properly, our stomach churns out acids, we have nightmares, or lie awake, we go
numb and may have outbursts of disconnected anger.

Our bodies manifest anxiety in various forms, commonly: insomnia, tooth grinding
or jaw clenching, fibromyalgia, loss or the gaining of weight, constipation,
diarrhea, and high blood pressure. Anxiety gone unchecked affects all systems of
the body including: Muscular-skeletal, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular. Anxiety
can and does can cause heart palpitations, and an increase of any of the above
symptoms which can result in a deeper more serious illness such as TMJ, (tempro
mandibular joint syndrome), colitis, stroke, and heart disease. Wilhelm Reich,
MD, father of all modern body psychotherapies and body-mind medicine, spent
years researching what happens to the body under these kinds of stressors, and
developed a therapy to help people not only deal with, but cure their neurosis
based physical ailments. John Pierrakos, MD, founder of Core Energetics and
co-founder of Bioenergetic Analysis was a student of Wilhelm Reich's when
Pierrakos was a young medical student in New York in the late 30's and early
40's.

Anxiety gone untreated also affects our minds and thought processes, our
emotions and feelings, and our spiritual well being. We cannot think straight.
Our thoughts may seem to make sense but they are distorted. We lose the capacity
to see our own issues and think logically about how to make positive changes for
ourselves. Our emotions become unbalanced -- blocked, distorted, or over active.
When we lose connection with our spiritual source our well being, sense of peace
and general safety is disturbed. We don't know why we are here in this life, our
purpose escapes us. Life can seem too hard, too lonely, too frightening.

Always, our unresolved childhood issues and woundings come to the surface and
cloud our present reality. It's just the way life works. Something happens in
the present that reminds us, usually unconsciously, of our past, and the
emotions from our past lock us into behaving from that same wounded child state.
If we were abandoned or threatened with abandonment as children, we probably are
terrified of being left now. This underlying terror keeps us in situations which
are not healthy for us as adults but our emotional child's way of experiencing
life tells us that if we are left we will die. We feel this because- that is
what would happen to a child who is too young to care for him/herself.

If we grew up in a family that did not allow emotions to be freely expressed, or
even talked about or acknowledged, were allowed to express only "good" feelings-
like happiness was OK but anger, and sadness were not-- we were set up to
become anxious adults. People need to express all aspects of their emotional
repertoire in a safe environment. Research tells us it's healthier that way.

Some behavioral symptoms we can look for that tell us we have undiagnosed
anxiety are as follows: Is it hard to relax? Do you have to be doing something
all the time to feel relatively comfortable? Do you dislike or downright hate
being alone or conversely feel uncomfortable being with others? Do you overeat?
Eat foods you don't want and aren't good for you? Do you watch TV more than a
few hours a week? Do you use your computer to keep from being with yourself? Do
you play a lot of video games or solitaire? Do you awake after a couple of hours
of sleep thinking about problems for the umpteenth time? Do you indulge in
disconnected or unsafe sex? Do you stay up doing things or watching TV even when
you are tired? These are all signs of anxiety.

Many people search for medical answers for their suffering and end up taking
medications rather than probing for the cause of their neurotic anxiety.
Searching for ways to make life change and better ways to deal with problems to
provide a true cure rather than masking symptoms is the way of Core Energetics.

Core Energetics works with all levels of the human being, physical, emotional,
mental and spiritual. Working with the body is essential as that is where we
manifest anxiety. Core Energetics Therapy is most helpful and necessary for many
people suffering from anxiety. To begin or continue your healing start with some
simple but powerful tools.

1. Mediate 20 minutes every day. Just sit quietly and breathe. Allow your
thoughts to gently flow through your mind. Don't try to stop them.

2. Exercise at least 20 minutes a day. Just open your door and walk in any
direction for 10 min and then turn around and come back.

3. Get more light in your life. Literal light. Sunlight. (Wear your
sunscreen) We know that natural light affects us positively and not enough
natural light affects us negatively.

4. Connect with nature. Go outside more.

5. Eat as close to natural foods as possible. More veggies and fruits.

6. Give up coffee and beverages with caffeine

7. Give up sugar and processed foods

8. Some medications both prescription and over the counter, have anxiety
as side effects. Even anti-anxiety medications. Ask your doctor.

9. Find a job you love

10. Live only with people who love you

11. Help someone else

12. Work to save the earth

13. Upon awakening be grateful for what is good in your life. Give thanks!

Here's what I did in August. All of these things are helpful for anxiety as
well. Every day: I walked several miles, chopped down some trees to clear some
land, painted the house, meditated, talked to friends, prayed, and ate great
food. I spend time with friends every few days, read good books and danced. I
have an ongoing project to assist some kids in need to have a better life.
Besides being part of my spiritual path, helping others helps me keep
perspective about my own life. (See link below).

Meeting with Remarkable Women: 100 and 90 Years Old

Shopping in Calais Maine 2 weeks ago, I met a woman in the bread isle. She asked
me to help her find the 100% whole wheat bread which I cheerfully did. She
explained she had a hard time with the smaller print but her eyes were good
enough to keep driving. We chatted as I asked her if I could assist her with
anything else. She eventually told me she was 100 hundred years old, looking
forward to 101, and lived in the Methodist Home but was quite independent. She
didn't look a day over 80! I thought of the Delaney sisters and how amazing they
were up into their early 100's. I asked and she told me she ate well, didn't
smoke or drink and exercised daily. She was a delight. I then stood at the
checkout and asked the woman in front of me.can you believe that woman is 100
years old? She replied, well, I'm 90. She also drove herself there and did her
shopping unattended.

A few days later I had lunch with two ministers who are history buffs and know
this area very well. I mentioned these women to them and they proceeded to list
many people from this area who have lived well, physically and mentally, all the
way into their 100's. My own great uncle lived with all his mental faculties
until 101. He built his own house at age 86. Born and raised in Maine, he lived
a simple and rich adult life in a rural community in Connecticut.

A slight aside: Alexander Lowen, co-founder with John Pierrakos, of Bioenergetic
Analysis, is still working at age 92. His mind sharp as a tack. I have visited
Lowen at his home on a few occasions. He lives on acres of land with a small
lake where he has animals and drives around on a small tractor. He loves being
on the land. Lowen has written much about the simple life of the body and its
importance in mental and physical health.

So what is it about these people? What is it about this place? The air is clean,
the water has been pristine until recently, life may be physically hard but it
has few of the anxiety producing factors of modern life. People help each other
here. The pace is conducive to living. Simply living. This place, Dennysville,
Maine did not get electricity until 1930 something!

And that brings me to the next topic.

Native American Wisdom or What Did the Blackout Teach Us?

Basic wisdom of the Native American teaches that we should never do anything,
make any decisions, until we have considered the impact of a proposed action on
the next seven generations. Seven! That's for approximately the next 140 years.
What if we applied that to everything we do to our environment? Think about it!
We must live in harmony with the earth and her creatures. Native Spirituality
teaches that we are part of all life on earth. We are dependant on everything
living to continue living well. or living at all. (New physics confirms that we
are part of the whole). Each living thing is not only important it is in fact
part of us, our brothers and sisters. When Native people say, "All my
relations", they are respecting and honoring all of life. Chief Seattle said in
1854, "The deer, the horse, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The earth
is our mother. All things are connected like the blood which unites one family.
Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons (and daughters) of the earth".

Now that New York and other major cities have their power back, I'm afraid that
people will quickly forget there ever was a problem and go back to their usual
ways. Go out and buy a new electronic can opener for example. And forget that
the sun is the best clothes dryer ever.

We have gotten off track with our neurotically perceived notions that to have
more stuff is the object of life. And it will make us feel good to have stuff.
(How and why we have gotten off track will be a topic for another newsletter).
More stuff means using up earth's resources. Some families have one TV set and
one car for every person. People no longer walk places or talk to each other
while waiting in lines or in airports. They drive and talk on their cell phones.

My suggestions: Walk to work, to the store, talk to each other. Read more books
with your family instead of watching TV. Get rid of all but one TV. Lock up the
game boys and video games for rare and special occasions. Go on bike rides,
walk, play music, sing together, cultivate quiet. Put on plays. Get involved in
ecological political pursuits.

We have to be stewards of this beautiful fantastic living thing we call earth.
We are literally dependant on her for our life and for our health. We must use
less- put more back. Get out and enjoy nature. Not just for a few hours on a
Sat afternoon but for days and weeks. Get in touch with Mother Earth. If you do
you will be healthier for it. And so will we all.

Sexuality & Heart: The Art of Relating: Feb 2004

Walid Daw conducted a wonderful and dynamic workshop on Feb 21 - 23 of this
year. In fact participants were so satisfied that they unanimously asked for
more days next year. The next workshop will take place over 4 full days. Dr Daw
will return with another Sexuality and Heart workshop February 20, 21, 22, 23,
2004.This time co-led with Pam Chubbuck.. You get us both! Mark your calendars.

This is what some workshop participants said about their experience: J.Y. said;
"I have received a great gift from the workshop with Walid, a gift of seeing
myself, my gender and my sexuality in a clearer way, without having to resort to
overcompensation by becoming willful and aggressive." Jim also tells us that a
sweetness and gentleness has remained between him and his wife, since the
workshop. K.A., said that the workshop was one of the high points of her life.
Participants "Loved the workshop." KS has reported that just showing up for a
workshop with the focus on heart and sexuality, tolerating all her anxiety and
staying in her body, with the help and heartfelt gentleness of the workshop
leader was a healing.

Our culture and our caretakers have taught us to split our love feelings, our
heart-- from our sexual feelings, our pelvis. This causes tragic results, making
our lives difficult at best and for many miserable. People often seek love in
one place and sexual fulfillment in another believing that they can never have
both with the same person. Couples long for a sexual connection to equal their
heart connection and a heart connection to equal their passion with a lover.

This workshop taught us that we can have both and we can learn to relate to our
partners with our hearts and bodies.

It is the task of each of us on this planet to unify with ourselves first and
then with another if we choose to. The loving sexual union is the closest
experience that human beings can have to know union with the Universe, with
Spirit.

When: Feb 20-23, Friday through Monday, 2004

Where: Sandy Springs, GA . At The Link Counseling Center, The House Next Door.

Cost: $650.00 per person. Early registration by Dec 15, 2003, Couples, discount
$100.00. Individual discount $50.00.

Deposit: $200.00 couples, $100.00 per person

"To create physical and emotional health we must unblock our physical and
emotional energies and work to enliven our true nature, which is spontaneous and
joyful. We must explore our dark side and find what we are afraid of and angry
