OK, clearly, I'm an idiot. I could probably figure this out on my own, but my precious spare time can be so much better spent doing something else, and I know at least one of you on my list knows how to do this.

How the fuck do I run defrag in XP????

I find the defrag.exe files, and they pop up a DOS window for about a second, which goes away. I look under scheduled tasks, and it's not even listed. I thought it was a fluke of my computer, but my boss' computer is the same.

Help! Pretend I'm a total n00b and don't have a clue. And I'd love a path to the program. Please don't tell me anything that begins with "click on the start button", 'cause one of the first things I do on any new system is remove half those things.

Thanks in advance.

First off, you're not computer literate enough to be screwing around with the Start button options and removing things. Knock that shit off.

Second, the best way to find the Disk Defragmenter is Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter.

EVERYTHING in Windows starts with "Start >" so you'll just have to accept that.

*headdesk* Jesus. I've done that a hundred times. No idea why I totally spaced out on it now.

right click on my computer and choose explore.
right click on the drive you want to defrag and choose properties.
click on the tools tab.
Press the Defragment Now... button.
Press defragment.

Repeat for additional drives.

:-) call me on cell for any additional help 678-468-2283.

Take care and it's been to long.

P.S. I would agree with Bulwerk, though for a different reason. Most newer tech support people can't support getting in the back door and need the Start Menu to support you :-) It is the only thing Microsoft teaches nowadays.

Ain't that the sad truth. It's part of why I didn't bother going the route you did (which I prefer, but that's anther story). It's just easier to condition people to use the start button when you are giving simple help answers.
