When I first met ashlupa, the first thing out of my mouth was "Hi, my name is bheansidhe and the second thing was, "So why are you in a chair?" Which was probably appallingly rude, but as she later pointed out, I'm the only person in that group that she still hangs out with, so she must have forgiven me. Or at least been amused by the direct approach.
I think at the time my version of logic ran: "If I ask her directly, I'll know, and I can get the wondering out of the way and just interact with her as a person, since there's obviously nothing wrong with her mind, just her leg."
It's not something I would ask casually, and I've never asked any of the other non-AB people I've met.
