The Great LiveJournal
Outage of 2005

During the outage I got a life. Upon discovering LJ again lived, I happily disposed of it.

What did you do?

Brought to you by geek-foo

In other news, I am not fired. I'm on a 30-day probation, during which I cannot be charge nurse (a blessing, really), cannot do facial rejuvenations of any kind (apparently, that's considered a privilege - it's completely different than the lasering I did that I fucked up on), and I have to have the settings I use on each client verified by the charge nurse, or one of the more experienced nursing staff. At the end of 30 days, if I haven't fucked up again, I can go back to duties as normal. If the same holds true for 90 days, my record will be expunged. If I do it again in the 30 day period, I'll be fired and the board notified, and it'll go against my license. Fucking ouch, but fair enough. Apparently, the owner still wanted to fire me, but the charge nurse talked her out of it. Some others said they would have had some things to say about that, too. It's nice to be loved. No word on how the client is doing. The medical director will be there tomorrow, so probably she'll say. I can't tell what's up with the owner - I've spoken to her today, and it's like nothing happened. Not sure if I should apologize, pretend likewise nothing is wrong, or what... We'll see. The one thing I forgot to ask is if I'm allowed to get treatments myself during this time. I'm due for a couple of things, but not sure if I should do them until the 30 days is over. It won't kill me to wait. Going late doesn't fuck with the schedule that much.

Also, I got my schedule for ParaQuad in the mail today. It would seem my client is keeping me on (5 days a week, still) through February. I'm surprised, 'cause he hinted that they weren't. Anyway, good for the cash, bad for the sleep. I'll take the cash, thank you very much.

Thanks to all for all your support!!!

I thought of you when I went for my follow up last week. I didn't know how disruptive it'd be to say hi to you so I didn't ask.

Actually, Dr. Kavali's main office isn't anywhere near Sona, so I wouldn't have been there, anyway. But thanks for thinking of me! :) Hope everything went/will go OK!!! :) :) :)

What bothers me is that the tech (you) is considered at fault when anyone with two brain cells to rub together knows that exposure to a laser capable of burning hair or skin tissue is risky. I'm even more bothered by the idea that they exected you to get a second opinion out the bitch client. Do they not train you to be knowledgeable about what you do? Do they not train you to be able to discern accurately what needs to be done? If not, then you are automatically not at fault, they are, for failing to properly train the employee. Either way, you still get fucked for any mistakes, but what message are they trying to send?

As for the owners, here's a bit of advice. Don't say a goddam word about it to them. It's not your place. If they have chosen to not bring it up, you can only screw yourself by mentioning it. The matter is handled and dealt with, leave it the fuck alone. As for the client, don't worry about her. She won't be back to bother you. It's not like the business lost any money with her. She was not a regular customer. She was a one time client and the money she was worth is not a factor in profits. She has no effect on it at all, save for a couple of people who she might tell that are also not paying customers. Forget about her, she's not important.

For that matter, what other factors might she have caused that led to being torched? Maybe she sat in the sun too long afterwards? Who knows, who cares? You can't please everyone, so stop trying.

This has been a public service announcement from those of us living in reality about business and stupid people.

*hug* Thank you so much! In all actuality, you're right in many respects - lasers are dangerous, and you pretty much should know that when you come in for it. As my supervisor said, "That's not a flashlight you're holding." I don't recall off the top of my head what all the disclaimers say that the clients have to sign. But I'm sure risk of burns is on there. And yes, the training left much to be desired. However, I do see my supervisor's point, that I found myself in a gray area, and rather than double-checking my decision with my more experienced co-workers, I plunged ahead. That was, in retrospect, a poor decision on my part. Not all cases are easy to discern the "best" thing to do. But yes, you are correct, in that the parameters that I fell outside of were not thought of as "standing orders", by myself, or my co-workers, prior to this incident. That had not been made clear. I know of several employees who were working with the same parameters I used (and, luckily for them, they didn't burn anyone), and thought little of it. I just got to be the guinea pig, it would seem. Not that anyone wanted that to happen, I'm sure. More accurately, I suppose, I'm just the first one that making that mistake bit me in the ass, so I become the example. And frankly, I'm OK with being the example, as long as I don't lose my job.

The clients usually pay for a package, and this was her first treatment of 5 (it takes 5 times for it to work permanently). Likely, nothing will damage her badly, and she'll be back for the other 4. Time will tell on that one. No one seems to have information on her current condition. And you're right - we can't guarantee what happens before or after the laser treatment. I can't tell you how many times people go in the sun afterwards, and expect us not to notice. This was her first time, so I had no baseline to test against, but that may have been a factor.

The owner seems to be treating me as usual, so I don't know what to make of that. I honestly wonder what's coming from whom, and if some of this wasn't scare tactics, but I'm not sure what's coming from where. Again, I got to keep my job, and I'll think twice in the future. I've had several co-workers express much happiness that I wasn't fired. Bottom line is, clients love me, and luckily, that counts for a lot.

Anyway, again, thank you. I miss seeing you on Mondays.
